Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2397
1802 $2.50 Capped Bust. 2 over 1. NGC graded MS-63. A choice, bright-yellow example with nice, coppery toning on both sides. Typical central weakness, as seen on most examples of this date. Free from any adjustment marks. One of the top dozen survivors out of an original mintage of a mere 3,035 coins. NGC reports 9 in this grade, exceeded only by a single MS-65 (most likely the Pittman coin). Nice, original early gold such as this specimen is truly rare and being devoured up by increasing demand.

Although called an 1802/1 overdate, close examination of this high grade example shows no trace of an underlying 1. Admittedly, a thin line connects the upper tip of the 2 with the curve beneath, but this appears to be more of a die defect than an undertype. Breen also questioned this "overdate", noting that the only reason it is considered at all is because of the 1802/1 Half Eagle, which is a true overdate.
Estimated Value $35,000 - 40,000.

1804 $2.50 Capped Bust. PCGS graded AU-55 PQ. A better than average struck specimen with plenty of original mint luster still intact. We note some faint adjustment marks as made on the left obverse stars and cap; all with pleasing natural light golden-orange toning. Pop of 5 with 27 better, the finest being in MS-63 (PCGS # 7652) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,500.

1804 $2.50 Capped Bust. 14 stars on reverse. NGC graded AU-50. A nice and attractive example of this classic American gold coin. Slightly dullish luster on the obverse, with a pleasing orange-gold color. The reverse is brighter, with lots of luster and scattered traces of coppery toning over green-gold surfaces. Nicely struck and problem-free, virtually devoid of any adjustment marks. Mintage of only 2,324 pieces. This 14-star reverse was also used to strike 1804 dimes! The placement of the stars on the reverse also indicates that this may have been a die left over from 1798 (from 1802 on, the stars appear in three arcs above the eagle). The 14 stars reverse is decidedly more "common" than the 13 stars reverse, but both are rare, and this represents an excellent opportunity to puirchase a nice, high grade example.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

1857-D $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. A crisply struck example with soft, satiny luster and a delicate, yellow-gold color. Most of the denticles and all of the stars are well-defined (a treat on any coin from this Southern Mint) and even the tiny die chips that are scattered about the obverse are readily visible. All 2,364 1857-D Quarter Eagles were struck from a single die pair and they remain prime rarities in the series. Mint State examples are exceedingly rare -- PCGS reports 6 in this grade, 5 in MS-62, and 1 in MS-63 (PCGS # 7783) .

1865 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. A pleasing, high-grade example of this rare business strike, with coppery-orange colors and a nice, bold strike. Only 1,520 1865 Quarter Eagles were made, along with 25 Proofs, and very few examples have survived. PCGS and NGC have graded less than 40 pieces combined, virtually all of which are in circulated grades. NGC alone reports 1 in this grade, 2 in AU-55, 7 in AU-58, and none in Mint State. To show how tough this date actually is, Bass coin was a PCGS AU-53 which sold for $17,825 in October 1999.

1881 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58 Prooflike. Pale-yellow in color, with lightly abraded fields and bright, prooflike luster in the protected areas. The strike is very strong, giving the appearance of a circulated Proof, but this is clearly a business strike and probably one of the first coins from the dies after the Proofs were struck. The 1881 Quarter Eagle is one of the "keys" of the series and it's mintage of only 640 coins is only slightly greater than the much more widely recognized (hence, expensive) 1875! NGC reports 2 in this grade, 1 in MS-60 PL and 8 in MS-61 PL.
